Day 4 of the Centennial Newport to Bermuda
Monday
our spirits went from high to much less high as we sailed into very
light to non-existent breeze on more than one occasion, both during the
day and night. Our earlier excellent position in the fleet, as seen in
the regatta tracking system, suffered accordingly, since it seems the
nasty "air holes" were especially attracted to us and others nearby,
giving the boats behind a chance to catch up and more. They took full
advantage of their good fortune. It was a bit depressing having to
catch up to, and pass, a 43 foot Alden cruiser Tuesday morning.
Beautiful boat but not one we want to see only 80 miles from Bermuda.
Although
the racing was not what we hoped it would be the past 24 hours, life is
still good on board the good ship Cygne. We had several close
encounters with the wonders of the natural world- dolphins, whales,
mahi mahi, and flying fish were seen. So far still no sea turtle
sightings.
Bermuda is now only a day away and we are working our way
toward the finish line against light southerly winds. I think everyone
is looking forward to a nice, long shower, a "real" bed, at least one
of the traditional Dark and Stormies at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club
and the beauty of Bermuda. That's it for today from Cygne.
