Newport to Bermuda Day 2
Happy Father's day to all the dad's out there!
Saturday,
Day 2 of the Newport-Bermuda Race was another fantastic sunrise.
Karen's omelette casserole was a perfect way to fuel up for an exciting
day of challeneges. The rest of the day brought notably sustained winds
and excellent speed, helping to re-inforce that our decision to take
the Westernly Route but its a long race and the second part from the
stream to Bermuda will depend on if our analysis of what the winds will
be proves to be correct.. We reached the Gulf Stream ahead of
anticpated shcedule and managed to cross this potentially trecherous
river through the sea at its narrowest point. The day and evening were
full of strategies to maximize our speed. In fact we raised every sail
in Cygne's wardrobe, including the genoa staysail , job top, heavy 1,
Lt 1, and the 1a,3a,2s spinnakers. The spinnaker peel changes at night
were interesting but went well. It was a tiring day, but Erika's ham
and bean casserole with scalloped potatoes provided the delicious
nourishment we needed for the next phase of our journey.
During
the overnight shifts however, temperatures rose and winds dropped.
Leaving us, and the few ships we could see sturggling to get moving.
Fortunately for us, our timing proved advantageous since our speed over
ground was signifcanly more than our speed through water. This is due
to the strong current which we hoped to find and did. At several points
we dropped all but the main in order to maximize the effects of the
current.
Once again, we have been fortunate that spirits run
high, despite the many challenges, wind changes, sail changes, and the
like. We'll have more to report tomorrow as Sunday has already proved
to be an interesting race day. The current is still providing more
power than the wind, but we are pushing along trying find the elusive
breezes that will carry us to Bermuda.
Thanks for stopping by.
Expect another report by tomorrow at noon. And a very Happy Father's
Day to the dad's aboard, Ray, Brad, Fred, Dave, Michael and of course
all the dad's at home.
Good bye for now.
Cheers,
Joe Romanelli
