CAPTAIN’S SUMMARY
CYGNE’s 2008 BERMUDA RACE JUNE 20-24
This was not a typical Bermuda Race. It was interesting, challenging, eventful and tough. The easiest way to describe it was a four-and-a-half day beat to weather, most of the time in confused seas. Four-and-a-half days to weather means you are always on a 15-25˚ angle of heel, pounding into a mixed set of waves, constant spray and solid water coming aboard, and changing sails on a heaving deck awash with water. This meant we had to...

Final Entry
After nearly five days at sea, Club Cygne rolled
into Bermuda, still rocking hard. The last few nights were full of
hardcore sailing events, including glow-stick light shows, a
Monster-Swan rally, and even a domestic violence clinic. The official
finish time for the almighty swan was 09:07:04 ET, and at approximately
9:08 the Heinekens made their appearance. The finish of the race also
spurred the emergence of countless items that had been "squirreled"
away by various crew members throughout the voyage, mainly Starbucks
Double Shots, Mike & Ikes, and Diet...

Day 4 of the Centennial Newport to Bermuda
Monday
our spirits went from high to much less high as we sailed into very
light to non-existent breeze on more than one occasion, both during the
day and night. Our earlier excellent position in the fleet, as seen in
the regatta tracking system, suffered accordingly, since it seems the
nasty "air holes" were especially attracted to us and others nearby,
giving the boats behind a chance to catch up and more. They took full
advantage of their good fortune. It was a bit depressing...

Day 3 began with another amazing sunrise. The beautiful day quickly
turned against as the calm seas and light wind had us drifting along.
The impact of this weather really registered for the crew as we sat for
ten minutes and gained no ground on the orange peels that were tossed
aside. But sure enough, with some good strategy, many sail changes and
bit of luck we soon found ourselves back in the steady winds we have
grown accustomed to during the race this year. In what seemed like no
time, we went from barely moving, to cruising through some heavey
swells.

Newport to Bermuda Day 2
Happy Father's day to all the dad's out there!
Saturday,
Day 2 of the Newport-Bermuda Race was another fantastic sunrise.
Karen's omelette casserole was a perfect way to fuel up for an exciting
day of challeneges. The rest of the day brought notably sustained winds
and excellent speed, helping to re-inforce that our decision to take
the Westernly Route but its a long race and the second part from the
stream to Bermuda will depend on if our analysis of what the winds will
be proves to be correct.. We reached the Gulf Stream ahead of...

Newport to Bermuda Day 1
The day began gloriously as the sun was
shining brightly and a nice wind was already pushing us as we
approached a cheering Erika aboard the Arabella. We hit the start line,
a massive Coast Guard ship, at exactly where we wanted to be, Cygne in
perfect position a second before the gun. We got off to a great start,
in clean air with a commanding position. But a great start is only the
first step in this adventure. Even before the race began, we debated
and discussed at agony, which course would carry us to Bermuda ahead of
the crowd. The two...
